Tunstall sits on the northern edge of the Stoke clay belt — clay-heavy in town, with patches of mining spoil and made ground in the Goldenhill and Chatterley areas. Stump grinding sometimes hits buried colliery debris.
Tunstall Town Conservation Area covers the older streets around the park and town hall. Several lime avenues are individually TPO'd. The Chatterley area has fewer TPOs but more council-owned mature trees needing maintenance rather than removal.
